Self Esteem - Life Transitions

Self Esteem – How to Start Loving Yourself

How we feel about ourselves is probably the most important factor in our mental health.

It not only impacts how we treat ourselves, but also how well we are able to create the life we want for ourselves.  If we don't have an unconditional relationship with ourselves, we are likely to put ourselves down and surround ourselves by people who don't treat us well. We are likely to sell ourselves short by settling for less in how we create our life circumstances, and may find it difficult or impossible to set boundaries with others.  Our self esteem has a large impact on how we live our life, our emotional stability, and our overall level of happiness.  Self esteem is how we feel about ourselves, our own personal thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions about who we are.  It is greatly affected by how others interact with us, and how we perceive other peoples’ feelings about us, especially our parents, who are our often the most influential people in our lives.  Low self esteem can lead to feelings of worthlessness, self-sabotage, make us avoid social situations, and lead to clinical depression.

What's most important is not allow your self esteem to be exclusively determined by what other people think about you.  You must allow yourself time for personal introspection and self evaluation in order to get a better understanding of who you are..  If you are satisfied with who yourself  you will maintain a high level of self esteem.  If you see things that you don’t like about yourself, you must first accept yourself anyway, and the you can work to improve those things to become even better! Setting reachable goals and working towards them will give you a sense of accomplishment.  Reaching personal goals is a great way to improve self esteem.

If you are having trouble dealing with low self esteem, therapy can help you discover who you are.   By discussing what makes you feel bad about yourself you can pinpoint personal issues and develop a plan to take accept yourself, while you also make changes to make yourself even better.  Every person can learn how to love themselves and understand who they really are if they are willing to practice!   Learning to manage stress through mindfulness can also greatly improve self esteem and your overall relationship with yourself.
